Recent studies by German scientists have proved that our dreams depend on the smells that we breathe during the day or at night. It turned out that unpleasant smells, for example, rotten eggs cause nightmares, and aroma of roses contribute to pleasant dreams. This is due to the fact that the brain area responsible for the plots of dreams manages and smells.
Scientists from the University Hospital in Mannheim watched 15 young healthy women sleep for a month. During the dream phase, the participants in the experiment were told either a pleasant or unpleasant smell, and then woke up. After awakening, the emotional state of the participants was assessed.
As a result, the researchers found that during sleep the brain reacts to odors and, depending on the nature of the olfactory effect, gives out various "plots" of sleep.
Scientists expect that their discovery will give impetus to the emergence of a new kind of psychological therapy.
Already, experts advise to create a favorable environment for sleeping independently, using various essential oils or bouquets of those flowers, whose smell has a beneficial effect on the quality of dreams.
